Camping on the Big Sur coast

Hobie went on another camping trip, this time to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. It's a gorgeous park filled with towering redwoods. But like most California state parks, dogs are not allowed on any trails. So we made our way down to Pfeiffer Beach, and since it is owned by the National Forest Service, it's dog friendly!

On our way down to the coast, we realized we had forgotten to bring a toy for Hobie. Luckily, we spotted a pet store along the freeway and made a quick dash inside and chose a Chuckit! Flying Squirrel
. The crazy miniature schnauzer was clearly delighted with his new toy.

Hobie was definitely a much happier camper at Big Sur vs. Big Basin. It was much warmer at Big Sur and running off leash at Pfeiffer Beach was pure heaven. We wrapped up the weekend by spending the afternoon on the Carmel River Valley State Beach

Ah, back on the beach again in Half Moon Bay. Life is good.

Goodbye San Francisco

This was Hobie's last time at Baker Beach before embarking on a new adventure. Details to come...

Smelling new things at Mori Point

This weekend we went to Pacifica. We started at the pier, and walked along the golf course until we got to Mori Point.

There were a lot of dogs along the golf course, almost all of them on leash. Of course, there were a lot of new smells also, and sometimes Hobie just really really wants to smell something.

Hobie is now almost 30 pounds, and he can muster quite a bit of strength considering his size. If he wants to smell something, and he can't reach, he'll use all his power and try to claw in order to get closer to whatever he wants to smell.

It was a nice, cool, and foggy day. The surf was pretty high, and there were only a few surfers along the beach.

There were not a lot of people hiking here, and Hobie was the only dog we saw. There were plenty of dogs along the beach, but none up on the trails themselves.

Hobie hiking at Mori Point

Here we are starting to climb up to the highest point during the hike. It was pretty foggy, so we couldn't see too far when we got to the top, but Hobie seemed quite happy that it wasn't too hot.

Another day at the beach

From the dog walker:

Hobie a a fun playgroup day at the beach.

Today was another rainy day. This morning, Hobie saw people at the park with umbrellas, and his tail went between his legs. It's bizarre how scared he is of umbrellas now.

We knew that the dog walker would take Hobie to the beach. We knew that Hobie's coat was full of sand, and that his collar was a little wet.

However, we didn't know what he actually did, until we got these pictures:

Farewell to the red ball

Hobie went to the beach at Crissy Field today. He was running around like the crazy dog he is, collecting smiles from people we met along the waterfront.

We brought his red ball, and he was pretty much running non-stop up and down the beach fetching it. Until we decided to throw the red plastic ball in the water. Apparently, it doesn't float too well, because as soon as the first wave was over it, it was gone. Poor Hobie spent the next few minutes frantically looking for his priced posession, but it was nowhere to be found.

The red ball was one of his favorite toys...

On the way back we met a white Miniature Schnauzer - the first one we've seen here. That was a large mini also, pretty much exactly Hobie's size. He wasn't in a playful mood, though.

Back home he is now collapsed in his crate, tired from all the running. One of his eyes must have gotten sand in it, because he has trouble opening it. It looks OK though, but is a little red.

The irritated right eye.
